TACOMA, Washington—On an otherwise sleepy, slow work day, ahead of the 4th of July weekend, a mid-sized town about 30 miles outside of Seattle had slammed to a crawl. Cars and crowds lined a thoroughfare, all waiting to see… a giant bus with a drunken cartoon face.
Adult Swim’s Rick & Morty just announced its season 3 premiere date—officially coming July 30, after its first episode saw a surprise April Fool’s launch. To celebrate, the animated series has been sending a massive, Rick-themed bus across the nation stuffed full of merchandise.
There’s not much to the bus, beyond, you know, a disarmingly large Rick face covered in green spittle and a slew of overpriced merch. That didn’t stop a crowd of people eager to buy exclusive shirts and toys while posing with the ridiculous vehicle. The gathering in Tacoma was so massive, it spread across four city blocks. One fan even showed up with a tricked-out Jurassic Park Jeep, and its signage had been cheaply taped over to read “Anatomy Park” as an homage to the TV series’ odd episode of the same name.
So, I drove to Tacoma, braved its famous aroma, and snapped photos of what you can expect at a Rickmobile tour stop. The promotion has run sporadically since May, and it will continue through October with stops across the western and southern United States (including, of course, July’s San Diego Comic Con). Sadly, the Rickmobile had nothing in the way of Pickle Rick merch, which we hope will arrive after it and other new series concepts debut in the third season.
